USA attending exhibit FEMMETOGRAPHY: The Gaze Shifted
August 30, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT
Greetings Unity Senior Adventurers,
This month we’re going to the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture.
We hope you can join us as we visit an exhibit on Femmetography: The Gaze Shifted.
Femmetography: The Gaze Shifted examines the Black feminine gaze. The 2019 Teen Curators used the first book documenting Black women photographers as a guide. Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe’s 1985 opus, Viewfinders:Black Women Photographers, unravels the histories of these pioneering photographers and creates a space for their narratives to be discovered
Where: Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture
515 Malcolm X Boulevard
New York, NY 10037
When: Friday, August 30th

Optional and if we have time, there is a second exhibit to check out: A Ballad for Harlem examines several strands of Black placemaking in the 20th century, offering views of residents and institutions committed to community, innovation, education, fervent political engagement, cultural affirmation, global perspectives, and creativity. Exhibition highlights include the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the Speakers Corner, items from the recent acquisitions of artist and activists Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis and author Ann Petry, artwork by contemporary Nigeria-based artist Modupeola Fadugba featuring Harlem Honeys and Bears, Harlem’s daughter and tennis champion Althea Gibson, sculptures by Augusta Savage, and street scene photography of 1930s Harlem.
We are looking forward to seeing this exhibit with you. Let us know if you can make it.
Until then, enjoy the rest of this steamy summer!
